Peugeot Moovie concept

The third Peugeot Design Competition encouraged designers from all over the world to submit their designs for a Peugeot car they would like to drive.

The winning design came from a Portuguese designer, André Costa. Costa's creation is the Peugeot Moovie, an environmentally friendly city car.

For the 2005 Frankfurt Auto Show Peugeot made a 1:1 scale model of the Moovie. Not only that, but the Moovie was placed directly on Peugeot's show stand alongside Peugeot's own designs.

The non-operational Peugeot Moovie concept is made from the usual concept car materials; foam, epoxy, plastics, steel, polycarbonate and Plexiglas amongst others. It took a total of three months work at the Peugeot Style Center to take the Moovie from Costa's drawings and computer models to the finished full scale model.

As a further award the Peugeot Moovie was mass produced as a 1:43 scale model.

Peugeot rd

The Peugeot RD concept was the winning entry in the 2008 Peugeot Design Contest. The RD was created by Carlos Arturo Torres Tovar, a Colombian designer and graduate of the Industrial Design School at the National University of Colombia in Bogata. The brief for the 5th Peugeot Design Contest was "Imagine the Peugeot in the Worldwide Megalopolis of tomorrow".

The Peugeot RD concept, which was displayed as a 1:1 scale model at the 2009 Shanghai Motor Show, is a single seat vehicle which features an articulated system designed to help the driver weave in and out of tight spaces when driving in congested mega-cities.

The Peugeot RD is powered by a single electric motor for emission free travel, and the driving position offers a panoramic view which assists the driver while negotiating the packed streets. The RD also features voice activated systems and a heads-up display providing all the vital driving information.

While the Peugeot RD offers many luxuries and comforts impossible to achieve on a scooter or commuter motorbike, the fact that it is a strict single-seater kind of defeats the purpose of being a city friendly eco vehicle.

Peugeot omini

A new concept that entered the Peugeot Design Contest is the OMNI Concept created by Darko Markovic. The Peugeot OMNI is a strange and unusual car that uses the Omni wheel concept of the great designer from past to make sure that there are no parking problems in today’s cities. Thanks to the Omni wheel the car can spin and turn around at an instant making it easy to maneuver.

The Omni wheel idea belongs to the Swedish automobile designer Bengt Ilon, who created in 1973 a wheel that could move in any direction at a given time. His idea was to attach many roller-wheels around the rim of the main wheel to enable the wheel to spin in any direction and change angles at an instant. The rollers were oriented at an angle of 45 degrees with the wheels axis of rotation.

Peugeot 508 Concept

The unusually name "5 by Peugeot" concept car is another indication of the changing Peugeot styling. A change which began with the Peugeot SR1 concept from earlier in 2010.

The "5 by Peugeot" is a luxury saloon with a level of fit, finish and refinement designed to help elevate the company's products into the next quality bracket.

Powered by Peugeot's HYbrid4 technology the "5 by Peugeot" features a 2.0 litre HDi, 163 horsepower, diesel engine backed up by a 37 horsepower electric motor. This versatile setup offers a maximum output of 200 hp, an electric only mode for low speed operation, four-wheel drive when required, and low fuel consumption and emissions of 74.3 mpg and 99 g/km of CO2 or zero in electric mode.

The exterior of the "5 by Peugeot" can hardly be described as beautiful. Unlike the SR1 concept which had graceful flowing lines, and really helped showcase the new Peugeot image, this concept is a mismatch of lines and surfaces which come together to form an awkward vehicle with peculiar styling elements. Hopefully any production vehicle the "5 by Peugeot" influences has a slightly more coherent appearance.

Peugeot SR1 Concept

At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show Peugeot are set to unveil the SR1 concept car. The SR1 is an incredibly important concept for Peugeot as it showcases an all new design language for the company - one which will eventually permeate throughout the entire model range.

Peugeot's previous styling language was inspired by the feline form, but the SR1 appears to have a more technical and engineering orientated influence - and the results are fantastic! Just check out some of the more discreet styling touches like the wing mirror supports which thread through the a-pillars, and the sublime contours of the door panel.

According to Peugeot's marketing department the SR1 concept represents "a more extreme and pure expression of the Peugeot Style of tomorrow and also displays a new look corporate Lion badge."

The SR1 features Peugeots latest hybrid drivetrain, the HYbrid4 unit. On the SR1 a front-mounted 1.6 litre THP petrol engine with a power output of 218 horsepower is combined with a rear-mounted electric motor developing 95 horsepower. In electric only mode, the SR1 is a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV), with a combined cycle fuel consumption of 57.7 mpg or 119 g/km of CO2.

When the two powertrains are used at the same time the resulting 313 horsepower and all-wheel-drive layout results in outstanding performance and secure roadholding.

The SR1's dynamic abilities are enhanced thanks to a rigid, lightweight structure comprising of a one-piece body incorporating a tubular chassis onto which are mounted the drivetrain components and suspension.

Other engineering highlights of the Peugeot SR1 concept include speed sensitive four wheel steering, and four wheel independent double wishbone suspension.

Peugeot RC HYmotion4

The Peugeot RC HYmotion4 which was unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show is a sleek four-door coupe concept designed to bring together the engineering experience and styling lessons learnt from the Peugeot RC concepts from 2002, and the Peugeot 908 RC concept from 2006.

The styling of the Peugeot RC HYmotion4 displays many of the same characteristics found on the 908 RC, although perhaps this time it is a little more tame. However the same feline features which Peugeot are known for are still apparent, most noticeably in the shape of the slit-like headlights and grille shape which forms the nose.

In profile, the RC HYmotion4 concept punches above its weight. The sleek lines could easily belong to a more upmarket brand, and the designers have done a good job of seamlessly integrating four full-size doors into the body.

The Peugeot RC HYmotion4 is powered by a hybrid drivetrain which consists of a 218 horsepower (160kW) 1.6-litre THP petrol engine located at the rear of the vehicle, and a 95 horsepower (70kW) electric motor under the bonnet. Working in conjunction they provide a highly respectable 313 horsepower (230kW) and a combined cycle of just 109 g/km, or zero in electric only mode. The transmission is handled by a paddle shift semi-auto unit which sends the power to all four wheels. With this drivetrain the RC HYmotion4 is able to hit 60 mph in an impressive 4.4 seconds.

Inside the Peugeot RC HYmotion4 concept are four individual seats. The predominantly black interior is subtly highlighted with blue lighting and trim elements.

Peugeot 908 RC

The Peugeot 908 RC was a concept was first seen at the 2006 Paris Motor Show.

The luxurious 2+2 Peugeot 908 RC is powered by a 5.5 litre twin turbo V12 developing 700 horsepower and 885 lb/ft of torque. The same engine was used in Peugeot's 908 race car for the le Mans 24 hour race in 2007.

Styling of the 908 RC concept is not dissimilar to the Peugeot 907 supercar concept of late 2004. Although the new car has a more brutal looking front end when compared to the 907's leering grin.

The 20" front wheels and 21" rear wheels help accentuate the designers goal to immitate the shape of a big cat, from the nose at the front, to the tip of the rear lights.

Inside the Peugeot 908 RC concept all comfort systems including radio, MP3 player, satellite navigation, four-zone air conditioning, etc can be controlled via a large touch screen, or MMI (Man/Machine Interface) as Peugeot calls it. The MMI is also accessible to the 908 RC's rear passengers, thanks to a multimedia screen positioned on the centre console separating the two rear seats.
