The Toyota FT-EV II is a concept vehicle which was revealed at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. The vehicle is a development of the FT-EV concept Toyota trotted out at the Detroit Motor Show in early '09.
The FT-EV II is based on the Toyota iQ's platform. But instead of a small displacement gasoline engine, the vehicle is equipped with an electric motor supplied with power from a lithium-ion battery pack located under the floor. Maximum range for the Toyota FT-EV 2 is 56 miles (90 km), and the top speed is in excess of 62 mph (100 km/h).
Compared with the FT-EV the FT-EV II comes with a heavily revised headlight surround with three small windows under the main windscreen, enlarged taillights and a reconfigured roofline. But it's inside where the major updates occur.
Instead of a conventional steering wheel and pedals setup, as found in almost every car on the planet - including the previous concept - the FT-EV II is fitted with a bizarre joystick system which controls steering, acceleration and braking. The interior design features an unusual 'steam punk' style motif which looks both futuristic and distinctly old-world at the same time.
